Dearest Visionary... đź’«

Welcome back to our weekly edition of Friday Field Notes.

This week inside our Doctor of Functional Medicine program, we're exploring an important piece of the autoimmune puzzle: autoimmune markers. 🧬

When the immune system begins behaving differently, the body can leave clues.

Sometimes those clues show up in laboratory testing. Other times, they appear through symptoms, patterns, and changes that may seem unrelated at first.

A functional medicine approach asks us to look at the whole picture rather than focusing on a single number or isolated symptom.

Because a test result is only one piece of the story.

And when those pieces begin to connect, they can give practitioners a much clearer picture of what may be happening beneath the surface.

Read on as we explore three ways functional practitioners view autoimmune activity. 👇

🔬 Start With The ANA Test

The antinuclear antibody (ANA) test is a broad screening tool used when autoimmune disease is suspected. It looks for antibodies that react against the body's own cells.

When the result is positive and symptoms suggest autoimmune activity, additional testing can help uncover what may be happening. A deeper look may include:

  • Specific autoantibodies — Additional antibody testing can help investigate particular autoimmune conditions.
  • Inflammatory markers — Tests such as CRP and ESR can provide additional information about inflammation.
  • Complement levels — C3 and C4 may offer additional clues in certain autoimmune conditions.
  • Complete blood count — Changes in blood cell counts can provide another piece of the whole-person picture.

The ANA can open the door to deeper insight. But it doesn't tell the whole story.

🧩 Look At The Symptom Pattern

What if the most important clue isn't sitting on a lab report?

Functional medicine practitioners pay close attention to patterns of symptoms and how they change over time.

Some clues worth exploring include:

  • Persistent fatigue
  • Joint or muscle discomfort
  • Unexplained rashes
  • Digestive changes
  • Dry eyes or mouth
  • Recurring headaches
  • Temperature sensitivity
  • Changes in energy or sleep

One symptom may not tell us much, but several seemingly unrelated symptoms can reveal a pattern worth exploring.

A detailed health history can help uncover those connections. When did symptoms begin? What changed? What makes them better or worse?

Sometimes, the story reveals what a single test cannot.

🌿 Follow The Gut–Immune Connection

The immune system doesn't operate in isolation.

A significant portion of the body's immune activity is closely connected to the gastrointestinal tract, making digestive health an important area to explore when looking at immune dysregulation.

Details a practitioner may explore include:

  • Food sensitivities or changes in food tolerance
  • A history of digestive illness
  • Previous antibiotic use
  • Changes in diet or nutrient intake
  • Microbiome health
  • Stress and sleep patterns
  • Potential environmental exposures

The goal isn't to chase one marker—it's to understand the terrain in which that marker appeared.

✨ Within our Doctor of Functional Medicine program, students learn to look beyond isolated symptoms and individual test results to uncover patterns and connections throughout the body.

The most valuable question is: What is the body trying to tell us?
