Dearest Visionary... 💫

Welcome back to our weekly edition of Friday Field Notes.

This week inside our Doctor of Functional Medicine program, we're exploring one of the most important principles of functional medicine: looking beyond "normal" lab values. 🔬

Have you ever been told your lab work was "normal," yet you still didn't feel like yourself?

Fatigue. Brain fog. Hair loss. Weight gain. Poor sleep. Digestive concerns.

Many people are reassured that everything looks fine—yet their symptoms persist.

Functional medicine asks a different question:

What if "normal" isn't always optimal?

Rather than waiting for disease to develop, functional practitioners evaluate patterns, trends, and optimal ranges that may reveal subtle imbalances long before conventional medicine would diagnose illness.

Sometimes the body's earliest whispers deserve just as much attention as its loudest alarms.

Read on as we explore how functional medicine looks deeper than the reference range. ✨

🧪 Functional vs. Conventional Ranges

Most laboratory reference ranges are established by measuring a large population—including many individuals who may already have underlying health concerns.

Instead of simply asking whether a value falls within the reference range, functional practitioners evaluate whether biomarkers are in an optimal range for long-term health.

Examples include:

  • Vitamin D — Supports immune health, bone strength, and countless cellular processes.
  • Ferritin (Iron Storage) — Helps evaluate iron reserves that influence energy, hair growth, and oxygen delivery. 🥬
  • Vitamin B12 — Essential for healthy nerve function, red blood cell production, and cognitive health.
  • Magnesium — Involved in hundreds of enzymatic reactions, including muscle function, sleep, and stress resilience.
  • Comprehensive Thyroid Panel — Looking beyond TSH alone can provide a more complete picture of thyroid health.

🍃 Patterns Tell the Story

Functional practitioners rarely focus on one lab marker alone.

Instead, they connect multiple biomarkers to uncover patterns that tell a much deeper story about what's happening inside the body.

For example:

  • Thyroid + Iron Status — Low ferritin can contribute to symptoms often associated with hypothyroidism, including fatigue, hair loss, and cold intolerance.
  • Blood Sugar + Fasting Insulin — Elevated insulin may signal early insulin resistance years before blood sugar levels become abnormal.
  • Inflammation + Lipids — Looking at cholesterol alongside inflammatory markers can provide a more complete picture of cardiovascular health.
  • Liver Enzymes + Detoxification — Liver markers may offer clues about metabolic health, detoxification pathways, and overall liver function.
  • Nutrient Status + Energy Production ⚡ — Vitamins, minerals, and key nutrients work together to support healthy cellular energy production and overall vitality.

🔬 Looking Beyond the Lab Report

While laboratory testing provides valuable insight, functional medicine recognizes that numbers alone never tell the whole story.

A functional medicine practitioner is just as likely to ask:

  • What does a typical day of eating look like? 🥦
  • How well are you sleeping each night?
  • How are your stress levels?
  • Are you moving your body regularly? ✅
  • What environmental exposures are you encountering?
  • How is your digestion?
  • When did you first notice these symptoms?

Because true wellness isn't found by treating lab values alone—it's found by understanding the whole person.

💚 Within our Doctor of Functional Medicine program, students learn to combine laboratory interpretation with nutrition, lifestyle, environmental factors, and clinical history to uncover the root causes of chronic illness and support lasting wellness.
