Dearest Visionary... 💫

Welcome back to our weekly edition of Friday Field Notes.

This week inside our Doctor of Natural Medicine program, we recognize World Environment Day by exploring a concept deeply rooted in both conservation and holistic living: Rewilding. 🌎🌿

At the end of the day, most of us can agree on one simple truth: we can all be a lot kinder to the world around us.

If you don't need to cut down the tree—don't.

If you don't need to kill the bee—don't.

If you can leave a patch of wildflowers for pollinators, support a local habitat, or simply tread more gently upon the earth, those small actions matter.

Rewilding is the practice of restoring and protecting natural ecosystems by allowing nature to reclaim some of the spaces we've altered. At its heart, rewilding reminds us that we are not separate from nature—we are part of it.

Within natural medicine, this relationship has always mattered. Healthy ecosystems support healthy plants, healthy animals, healthy water systems, and ultimately, healthier communities.

Read on to explore how simple conservation-minded choices can help restore balance for both people and planet. 👇

🌎 Why Rewilding Matters

Rewilding is about more than restoring habitats—it helps support the health of entire ecosystems, including the people who depend upon them.

  • Increased Biodiversity — Supports a diverse array of plants, pollinators, wildlife, and microorganisms, helping ecosystems remain balanced and resilient.
  • Improved Water Quality — Healthy ecosystems naturally filter water, reduce erosion, and support healthier waterways.
  • Stronger Ecosystems — Native plants and species help create self-sustaining environments that can better adapt to natural changes over time. 🌱
  • Enhanced Human Wellbeing — Time spent in healthy natural environments has been associated with improved mental wellbeing, recreation, community connection, and a deeper relationship with nature.
  • A Legacy for Future Generations — Conservation efforts today help preserve healthy habitats, wildlife populations, and natural spaces for years to come. ✨

🌿 Rewilding Starts at Home

Rewilding doesn't require owning acres of land or launching a conservation project. Small actions often create meaningful impact.

  • Allow portions of your yard to remain a little wild.
  • Convert small lawn areas into native meadows or natural plantings.
  • Plant native trees, shrubs, and flowers whenever possible. 🌳
  • Reduce unnecessary mowing and trimming.
  • Allow natural ecosystems to regenerate with minimal intervention.
  • Avoid chemical pesticides and herbicides—use natural alternatives whenever possible.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply allow nature the space to do what it was designed to do. ✨

🐝 Supporting Pollinators + Wildlife

Conservation is often less about grand gestures and more about daily decisions.

  • Leave out shallow water dishes with pebbles for bees and beneficial insects. 🦋
  • Install birdhouses, bat boxes, or wildlife shelters.
  • Preserve flowering plants that provide food and habitat for pollinators.
  • Protect mature trees whenever possible.
  • Support local conservation and habitat restoration efforts. 🤝
  • Teach children to respect wildlife and natural spaces.

🤍 World Environment Day serves as a gentle reminder that we are not merely inhabitants of the earth—we are caretakers of it.

Within our Doctor of Natural Medicine program, students explore the interconnected relationship between human health, ecological health, conservation, and the healing intelligence of the natural world. 🌱

Happy World Environment Day! 🌎🌿🐝✨
